Kong: Skull Island is an aggressively mediocre monster flick. Maybe it was a bad idea to watch this immediately after Peter Jackson's 2005 epic. For all of its large scale & bluster, it's major flaw is that it's not exciting enough. It tries, all right, but something's just not there. It's tonally confused, the attempts at humor fall flat, too many under-developed characters populate the story and you don’t give a fuck about any of them. Tom Hiddleston & Brie Larson are woefully miscast as they have nothing to do apart from looking good, Sam Jackson is playing Sam Jackson and John C Riley was definitely the human standout, he kinda saved the latter half of the movie. There are two or three fantastic images, but that's about it.
