Ishan’s review published on Letterboxd:
Who else captures New York in such a lingeringly melancholic way? The routine noises of the city clashing gradually against the words of her mother’s letters is a painfully evocative reflection of physical and psychological distance (how apt of a time to rewatch this). It also taps so beautifully into the grey area of desire for familiarisation for a city that is new to you and the conflicting emptiness that comes with that.
Hopefully this and the wonderful The Meetings of Anna are a turning point for me with Akerman. This is the kind of subtle experimental filmmaking that really leaves a mark.
