The Godfather: Part II

The Godfather: Part II ★★★★★

The first Godfather movie was no slouch, but the equally-revered Part II marks a notable step up in elegance and ambition — broadening scope, refining form, delving deeper — while remaining entirely connected to its lofty predecessor. “Part II” is right; this is very much an organic continuation of a story that doesn’t feel complete without it and a style that is instantly recaptured by director Coppola, cinematographer Willis and composer Rota. Unlike many movies that alternate between multiple timelines, the two narratives here never distract from the other or disrupt the overarching sense of pace. Rather, they are symbiotically vicious and vital, responsible for at least half the picture’s emotional impact, contrasting one godfather creating a family with his successor shattering it — social and economic rise juxtaposed against moral and familial downfall. Sad and staggering. 10/10
