Seven Samurai

Seven Samurai ★★★★★

The first time I saw this was almost 2 years ago. It was my fist foreign language film and probably one of the first criterion collection films I had seen (without knowing it). It stuck with me to say the least. However, there was a lot that my past self definitely didn’t notice. Now that I’ve seen 19 (what!?!?) Kurosawa films, this is what I picked up with my newly evolved kinophile brain:

- the framing/blocking as always with Kurosawa is impeccable, but in this it really stands out. Especially with the large cast of characters, it makes it so the frame is never flat.
- Mifune’s performance frickin incredible. Comedic, sad, and powerfully commanding when necessary. This is also standing out above the rest of the cast who are impeccable as well
- it’s perfectly paced. No scene is too long or too short, and it’s never unnecessary either to the plot or characters.
- the score!!
- basically just perfect in every way.

I’m still surprised my past self loved it as much I did, but that just shows how seriously entertaining it actually is. I mean it feels like maybe 2.5 hours. Anyways those are my late night Seven Samurai ramblings.
