A pluvial melancholy. Sad, lonely people wading through a general malaise and the detritus of broken lives.

What I have to say on Magnolia will be scattershot, potentially incomplete, but I think that’s appropriate given the movie being discussed.

An incredible ensemble cast are running an acting clinic here. Tom Cruise is doing the best work of his career; "I won't cry for you", floors me. I miss Philip Seymour Hoffman terribly.

Is it long? Yes. But I don't feel the…

“I always had one foot out the door, and that prevented me from doing a lot of things, like thinking about my future and... I guess it made more sense to commit to nothing, keep my options open. And that's suicide. By tiny, tiny increments.”

Trying to play along with the top fives, below the quick lists are some deeper thoughts on the film.

Yeah, Steven, I feel you. Parents divorcing fucking sucks and I love the movies.

    Spielberg got me good.

  • Underwater

We need movies like this regularly. Strong cast (minus TJ Miller), concise, high concept played low-key, and good.

I love a deep sea movie. When you’re so far under water it may as well be outer space. You can squeeze tension from so many factors. Highly pressurised atmosphere will implode you, oxygen is paramount, there may be dangerous creatures, you could be affected by High-Pressure Nervous Syndrome. Underwater plays with its elements nicely and keeps moving forward from the opening, there’s little wasted time.

The Force Awakens was amazing! It didn't disappoint. I love it. I love it. I love it so much! The midnight showing was GREAT! The atmosphere was palpable. The first movie I've been to, that's received a unanimous round of applause from the audience, although it was more of a sitting ovation rather than a standing one because I think everyone needed a minute to take it all in. So yeah, Great movie. Thank you, J.J. Abrams.

"I'm a reasonable guy. But, I've just experienced some very unreasonable things."

Well, this is it. This is what I've been looking for recently.

Big Trouble in Little China has no pretensions, no delusions about what it is. It's is a full blooded, fun, crazy, exciting action adventure. It's pure film, this is what movies should be.

John Carpenter is one of my favourite directors, so I had some high hopes going in, but my expectations were surpassed on this one.
