If you're a fan of Princess Diana hoping to get a clearer picture of the People's Princess by watching Spencer, you'd be disappointed. Pablo Larrain's spirited and peculiar imagining of what might've happened during the weekend when Diana decided to end her marriage to Charles is head-scratch worthy. The plot played safe on a story that turned fascination to ambiguity instead.
What sustained Spencer is the spot-on performance of Kristen Stewart, a portrayal so credible and realistic its like Lady Di herself was exhumed to act. From her gaze, her voice, Di's famous slight tilt of the head, among others - Stewart did it perfectly. The Oscar nomination is well deserved! The haunting score by Jonny Greenwood is another magnificent piece of Spencer, along with the costume design and make-up.
