🇯🇵 Japanuary - [dir. Masaki Kobayashi]

I couldn’t quite find the time for this during last Spooktober, but finally caught all three hours of it. Loved! Kwaidan is a collection of four Japanese supernatural folktales.  I absolutely loved Kobayashi’s realized vision here. This was a high-quality production, and often times breathtakingly gorgeous. The cinematography was excellent, makeup and costume dept. killing it, set design and paintings: chef’s kiss. The stories were strong with great visuals. My favorite was definitely “The Woman of…

I like what the film is going for, but I found its execution a bit lacking.

I made a throw away joke a few reviews back about Canadian treasure, Sarah Gadon, being pregnant in almost every film she is in. She was pregnant in this one too. She’s so much more than a chronically pregnant Duggar wife.

Delawarean treasure, Aubrey Plaza, is a fave.

I was really impressed with Christopher Abbott when I saw him for the first time in Possessor. I am…

    🇯🇵 Japanuary- [dir. Katsuhiro Otomo]

I’m sure everything has already been said about this classic made by a legend. Otomo got the chance to adapt his manga series into a feature film with full creative control and the equivalent of $5.5 million in Yen, and he made it happen.

I read the first two installments of the manga some years back and I’m finally glad to have checked this out and gotten more of the story.

Recommended for fans of anime, cyberpunk, science fiction or dystopian tales.

Conveyance ID: hulu (English dub) (because i needed to fold a fuck ton of laundry)

This film was pure joy. I mistakenly watched this film sober, something I’ll have to remedy on rewatch. I love alcohol and I am mad for Mads, so this was a no brainer, but they really covered the entire spectrum of highs and lows that go with the consumption of alcohol.

I think it really drove home the “everything in moderation” witticism really well.
