Thanksgiving leans into iconic horrors of the past, but it’s this tried and tested slasher formula that gives Roth the perfect structure for his gory madness. It kind of feels like if one of the new Scream movies did a line of coke and went crazy. The kills are nasty, brutal, and of course gory. Every single set piece is intense and gruesome, you really have no idea how they’re going to hit you next. It’s shocking, energetic and fun as hell. Worth seeing for the opening sequence alone.

Joy Ride 2001
Decent little thriller. There’s a number of cool set pieces and some tense moments scattered throughout the film. Babyface Paul Walker is hunted down by the same guy who plays his boss in The Fast and the Furious. Didn’t realise he was THAT pissed at Paul for double-crossing them. Like a contemporary Duel, although not as good, but basically don’t fuck with truck drivers.

The New Land 1972
Utterly captivating and almost indescribably beautiful from start to finish. Maybe it’s just because I now have the whole picture, the full story, but I feel as though this is even stronger than The Emigrants. Troell takes us to social, spiritual, and moral dilemmas throughout this journey, all faced by the wonderful set of characters. Their actions and progression are hypnotic, I really could have watched this forever. The New Land builds upon the cultural differences presented towards the end…
