Cute adaptation of Oscar Wilde's story. Margaret O'Brien is adorable, precocious, and plucky -- standard Hollywood moppet fare. Robert Young is Robert Young and Charles Laughton seems to be enjoying himself (which was quite a treat because I usually see him in very serious roles). The whole thing is fun and charming and nice way to pass the time.
I was prepared for this to be much more exploitive of the "freaks" than it was. I wish the unedited version was out there somewhere because I found this actually very compelling and wanted more of it. The only thing that irks me is apparently this was once considered horror and there is no horror about it. These are real people who were ostracized from society and found love and acceptance in their own world and I think the film shows that very well especially for the time.
