The first scream is definitely a game changer, imo horror is like the rock genre and scream was it’s grunge phase. Both kickstarted a new wave, inspired many rock bands and slasher flicks, examples that come to mind are Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994), Halloween: H20 (1998) and I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997). The opening sequence is iconic and has been parodied many times whether that be the Scary Movie franchise, pop culture or Scream itself. Same goes for Ghostface, if you haven’t seen the film you’ll mostly likely recognize the look and what movie he’s from; just like Jason, Freddy, Michael Myers, Pinhead, etc. It’s also a simple look that reminds me of Michael Myers gray boiler suit.
The screenplay was perfect, the meta approach made the movie fun, self-aware and unpredictable. Also has one of my favorite duos, that being Billy and Stu, one’s serious and the other is silly; both are huge horror movie geeks like Randy. Our protagonists and crew were amazing that consisting of Sidney, Gale, Dewey and Randy. We also get a nice cameo from the late Wes Craven, it’s a blink and you’ll miss it moment.
