    The French Dispatch

    ★★★½

i liked everything here but didn’t quite love any of it. i feel like the “style over substance” argument hits even harder when it’s an anthology 🤷‍♂️

  • Pee-wee's Big Adventure

    Pee-wee's Big Adventure

    ★★★½

on one hand, Pee-wee was very annoying……on the other hand, there were a ton of truly bizarre gags that made me laugh out loud. also, i am terrified in what goes on in the mind of danny elfman. there’s no way that he knows peace.

  • Dune

    Dune

    ★★★½

pretty good! i’ve seen so many people talking about how the original is too confusing — and i don’t think that’s a problem whatsoever here. everything is straightforward. the only issue is that there’s *so* much world building, that it doesn’t give us much time for an actual movie. on the plus side: it’s ridiculously gorgeous and the casting is just about perfect, but it was odd walking out of this feeling like i just watched 2.5 hours of prologue.

  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show

    The Rocky Horror Picture Show

    ★★★½

there is so much movie packed into this movie. idk how it took me this long to see it, and the unreal expectations of everyone saying “omg you HAVENT SEEN ROCKY HORROR???” probably played a role in me being a little let down, but Tim Curry was obviously amazing, there were a few good songs, and the choreography/costumes were fun. as a movie, it’s pretty messy and incoherent but i guess that’s part of the charm, too. perhaps i’ll fall in love w it upon future viewings!

the only negative thing about loving Succession is seeing any of the actors in anything outside of Succession and being like, “wow! Connor Roy just got split in half!”

  • Happy Death Day

    Happy Death Day

    ★★★½

one of my many, horror/comedy, comfort movies. go babies!

  • Possessor

    Possessor

    ★★★½

went hard tbh. great performances, the concept is special, and I’m a hoe for some synths. here comes the dread 😁👍

  • Freaky

    Freaky

    ★★★½

could’ve fleshed out the emotional stuff a bit more but the kills were fun and the acting was pretty good! especially from the two leads

  • The Suicide Squad

    The Suicide Squad

    ★★★½

very fun! we’ve got several lovable characters, a few jokes that made me laugh out loud in a theater where i was completely alone, but something feels a lil disjointed about the plot. switching between several different bad guys, without knowing who to care about the most, always feels like it takes something away for me. it’s awesome to have a genuinely unique, weird, gory comic book movie with big names in it, though. ps Margot Robbie just keeps solidifying that her role as Harley is all-time great casting. it’s corny to say but she really seems like she was born to play that character.

  • Funny People

    Funny People

    ★★★½

+ depressed Adam Sandler is the best Adam Sandler
+ James Taylor saying “fuck Facebook!” and about a dozen other fun cameos
+ the way the plot mirrors real life in the first half is genuinely great

    - the plot falls apart in the second half
    - the runtime is far too much

  • Fear Street: 1978

preferred this to part one! didn’t have the burden of setting everything up and could focus on a good ol’ fashion, summer camp-slasher (…with a little bit of the aforementioned possession stuff sprinkled in). i was terrified that sadie sink was gonna get the maya hawke treatment, but we’re good 👍
