Letterboxd — Your life in film

shit slapped! feels extremely PTA, even tho he hasn’t explicitly made something like *this* before. its lightheartedness/general kinda coming-of-age-vibe puts it in an intriguing, different sorta category than his other films for me…but its humor, messy life lessons, and endearing hope, regardless of the circumstances — hits me in a classic PTA way. love this man, love this cast, alana haim is a star, etc etc etc

i don’t even have the words to describe what i just fucking saw. was skeptical in the beginning, got ready to dismiss it as lame as it progressed…….and then it busts the absolute fuck open. highly recommend seeing it just for the experience alone

edit after driving home from the theater: increasing from 4 to 4.5 stars just because they had the balls to make this. so fucking sick

absolutely fucking rips. virtually no stakes throughout the whole movie. just the boys, hanging out, catching up, being friends, and dancing in different locations. and the dancing is fucking incredible. i literally have this weird bias against dancing as an artform (it just never does anything for me) and my jaw was on the floor the whole time. the final night of performances is legitimately cinema at its finest. wonderful film.

jamie foxx is a generational talent, i have always said this. also…tom cruise does indeed run in this 😎 also also…i initially confused mark ruffalo for michael peña and i feel bad about it 👍

can’t believe i hadn’t watched this until now — it absolutely rips. the cast is so good. Page, Cera, Simmons, and Janney are phenomenal. some of the writing can be a little cringe but i feel like that’s part of the charm of it all. to be clear, though, a vast majority of the jokes land (there are some reaallly fucking good ones) and then the more dramatic, emotional scenes work surprisingly well too. great movie

DiCaprio, Hill, Robbie, McConaughey, Chandler...everybody is just acting their asses off. Especially Jonah Hill. He’s fucking transcendent in this.
