Well I had to ruin my streak of good movies eventually...
I'm a massive, massive fan of the Beatles and I liked the concept so I thought this would be a guaranteed success. But this is just self-important, ingratiating drivel. "Without the Beatles the world would be so much worse", oh come off it Danny Boyle, you're worse than a middle-schooler with a crush.
Ed Sheeran's cameo in Game of Thrones was too long, in this he was basically the third lead, thus absolutely unbearable. And you have Lily James and Kate McKinnon but you've made me dislike their characters? Now that takes a lot of effort.
I did really enjoy the "Help!" scene, it was the one time that I thought the music was well-integrated with the story and not just a gimmick. And I can't deny that Robert Carlyle as John Lennon did make me a bit emotional. Overall I guess this is inoffensive and cutesy but that's also what completely lets it down. This could have been so good if it was a lot more self-contained and satirical.
