Moonlight ★★★★★

Every single actor gives a performance like it’s their last day on earth, there just so much feeling involved in all the minuscule details.

Chiron being such a silent character really allows for this film to do what it does best: sensory filmmaking. There are so many other ways of expression that don’t include your words. Not to say that the dialogue is lacking in any way (all of Mahershala Ali’s scenes and the diner scenes prove that).

But when you hear the waves crashing in the background, you can also see them. When their hands grabbed the sand on the beach, you could actually feel the sensation alongside them. I can see Chiron’s grief, I can hear it and I can close my eyes and surround myself with it.

Masterful work from the first act to the last, this is one of the greatest films of this century.
