The perfect Easter film to watch this year.
It boldly mixes the most famous story every told with the soul of the 70’s, this couldn’t have been made earlier or later. While something being a time capsule of a certain period might make it seem outdated, Jesus Christ Superstar lives on through its music.
If you get past the absurdities that make this occasionally feel like Hair meets Life of Brian, you actually get an extremely well acted, thought provoking take on the classic biblical story of the Passion. And those songs are just our way into the innermost feelings of these mythical characters, and manages to humanise two people that are never humanised (Jesus and Judas).
