“You wrote a bad song, Petey!”
Absolutely hilarious and wonderfully bleak in some moments, painfully bland in others. This is a very hot take, I know, but it all comes down to my personal preference. I’m not a fan of stop motion animation, all through it’s the style of animation that I have the most respect for. However, this animation is above impressive. I never knew there were so many shades of brown. That being said, I personally think that this is an extremely ugly film. The animation comes off as kind of creepy and incredibly weird. But again, that’s just personal preference. I don’t like the ending very much either. This is my first Anderson, and although I’m incredibly disappointed, I must say that I adore his style. The symmetrical framing. The quirky script. The characters that feel like they could be real. I just viewed The Grand Budapest Hotel, and it was one of the most masterful films that I have ever seen. I can’t wait to see more of his work, but sadly, this one wasn’t for me. But, the positives end up outweighing the negatives by quite a bit. Check this out, you’ll probably enjoy it more than I did.
