The Northman

The Northman ★★★

No one is more surprised than me that I'm rating this a mere 3-stars! But this reminded me of "Annihilation," or even "Midsommar," in that it's a genre film so in love with its world and the idea of subverting its genre that it ends up pleasing no one—not the arthouse crowd hoping for a cerebral reward or the casual movie-goer who just wants to see Alexander Skarsgård have his bloody revenge. It's little surprise that the film comes alive when it pauses the narrative to watch Skarsgård bring wraith-like terror to a small Icelandic farm since it's then that "The Northman" most resembles what Robert Eggers does best: period horror.
