I love the career doors this Oscar nom is likely to open for Kristen Stewart, but that's about all I loved about "Spencer." This is a miserable dirge of a movie, particularly if you don't hold any fascination with the Royals, and while it adopts many of the techniques of the horror genre (and freely quotes from Kubrick's "The Shining"), it isn't able to take advantage of any of the pleasures or tension release valves that genre affords you; it feels like a Princess Diana biopic as conceived by Ari Aster, only less interesting than that sounds. When "Spencer" climaxes with a montage of Diana dancing in various outfits to stirring violins as the camera does Lubezki-like pirouettes around her, it feels like the filmmakers are finally admitting what the movie is really about.
