On paper, I'm in full support of James Wan taking advantage of "Aquaman's" box office success by throwing a ton of Warner Brothers production muscle at a gonzo horror script that feels Stephen King's "The Dark Half" crossed with one of those Wes Craven oddities like "Shocker" or "My Soul to Take." In execution, I wasn't drawn in by a single character or performance, meaning I was intermittently disinterested for two hours until Wan and his DP unleashed one of their visual flourishes. Gore Verbinski's remake of "The Ring" feels like a clear influence here, with the rainy Seattle setting and obsession with analog media, but unlike that film there's nothing to draw you into the mystery.
