As someone whose mother and family was displaced due to the Vietnam War, I felt as if this was one of the only films to truly capture the atrocity of American Imperialism, and did so in a way that felt so important considering the very recent and forgotten increase in violence against Asian people. Just an overall visual masterpiece on every front, no one is arguing that, but I found myself so moved by John David Washington and Madeleine Yuna…

Bottoms 2023
If Emma Seligman knocks out 1 or 2 more films of this quality, they will become maybe my second favorite director of all time. By far, the funniest film of the year, Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri have magnified in profile since I first became familiar with them (and since a close friend of mine was Tumblr mutuals with Ayo) and they are born to be stars. I have not cackled or cried that hard laughing watching a film in…

Ugetsu 1953
Spookytober 2023 Film #13
A true masterpiece about greed and it’s consequences and a film that really isn’t afraid to condemn its two male protagonists. Really ahead of its time as a feminist piece and themes here feel so universal. And while my description and the synopsis of the film may seem simplistic, it is still deeply profound in a world where people can sometimes fawn over material possession instead of appreciating the relationships they have fostered.

RewatchThe Babadook has spawned so many similarly themed films centered around grief as either literal or figurative monsters and while that has become nauseating to some, I still really enjoy these films! It was so to recognize revisiting this how little Amelia allowed herself to feel and how neglected Sam felt as they both were navigating grief in separate ways. As I get older, I do find Sam much less annoying and feel much more worse for him as he tries to find the tiniest ounce of attention from his mother.

Meet Cute 2022
People are giving this way too much credit, this was awful. Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson are two actors I really defend and each have been on a really poor television show that was not representative of their talent, but this was rough. The concept is never fully utilized, they have zero chemistry, and worse, this develops into the worst co-dependent relationship and has really weird moral lessons, like your trauma makes you who you are so you need your…
