I think that this film tries to tackle a lot of ideas and I don’t think that it succeeds at balancing them all in a clean way. But something that I always admire about Spike Lee is how much emotion he puts into his stories. The effects of the Vietnam War were massively devastating on so many sides. I don’t necessarily think this film was able to unpack it all, but it is a tough ask for one story to try and I respect it for what it tried to do. And I really respect the anger and fear and hopelessness that comes through. While this didn’t fully come together for me, I think there’s a lot that it does well and expressing rage at this whole situation is one thing it did remarkably well.
