My obsessed ass immediately associates this franchise with this nowadays, but 17 years ago, when I was 14 and saw this movie in the cinema (why am I so old?!) it immediately launched really powerful Johnny Depp crush. His Oscar nomination for this is one of my all time favorite Academy Awards nominations, along with Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids and RDJ for Tropic Thunder. And I think he's consistently great in all those films, even the latest one. It's just such an inspired, entertaining and unique performance.
Depp has enough charisma to carry this whole film. Not that he has too - Geoffrey Rush is so much fun to watch in this and the music and CGI are just outstanding and hold up incredibly well. I love Keira Knightley here (and in this whole franchise), but I always thought Elizabeth did Norrington dirty, really, girl, you are gonna go with Will instead? In any case, her Elizabeth is such a fun character and an action/adventure protagonist in her own right, in spite of seemingly playing damsel in distress. The scene where she threatens to drop the medallion - and in that moment SHE holds all the cards - is just an absolute delight.
One of the few films of this kind that didn't age at all and is just as fun now as it was in 2003.
