Favorites are movies I'm thinking about
In a few months, I'll be seeing dozens of my family members for the first time in years. As far as I'm aware, they should all know I'm a girl now, I've done my part in making that public, so it's out of my hands. The thing is, I don't expect them to be particularly understanding about it. I'm expecting dealing with a lot of deadnaming, misgendering, reminiscing about me "being a little boy", which is likely the only memory…
I don't think it could have been anyone except Laura Dern. I think it's what she brings to Inland Empire that makes it one of my favorites. Lynch working at a level this abstract is dangerously unstable without her bringing the performance of a lifetime to ground it. I can't picture any other actor making her performance work, let alone bringing the expressions that are burned into your retinas by the end of these three hours (flew right by btw). This could be my favorite Lynch.
