Malignant ★★★★½

A superb mix of wuxia flick and video nasty, Malignant is probably the most iconic and emblematic horror film of the year, gleefully running with its most absurd plot elements into a narratively concise and often very funny vision of what mid budget horror could be.

Most interestingly is that this film is divorced from the intellectual defensiveness of a24's "dark atmospheric" auteurism, instead blending classics of the VHS era and Gialo to create a grand Guignol vision of truly fun to watch horror.

It does drag at the beginning, I think that the film could have run a tight 90, but the last half solidifies itself as among the best of Wan's filmography.
