The Social Network

The Social Network ★★★★★

I have probably seen the Social Network at least 30 times and it is honestly just as entertaining every time I watch it. From a technical standpoint, the film is flawless. Incredible digital cinematography,a perfect score from Trent Reznor, great performances from Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Armie Hammer, Rooney Mara and yes my favourite Justin Timberlake performance. But on top of that, one of the greatest screenplays of all time by Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher's meticulously detailed direction. I believe this is his greatest film. Zodiac and Gone Girl are very close. It's also his most important film as it inspects the uncertainties that created the largest social networking site of all time. By doing this he is inspecting the uncertainties of a whole generation. Mark Zuckerberg: "People want to go online and check out their friends, so why not build a website that offers that? Friends, pictures, profiles, whatever you can visit, browse around, maybe it's someone you just met at a party. Eduardo, I'm not talking about a dating site, I'm talking about taking the entire social experience of college and putting it online." If it wasn't for the pioneers of social networking sites like Facebook, would we be here on Letterboxd with friends, profiles, whatever you can visit, browse around, maybe it's someone you just met on Letterboxd.
