The Shanghai sequence is among the very best things Spielberg has done. The action and set design are flawless, and the way the script establishes that this is but one of Indy’s many adventures should have become the model for blockbuster worldbuilding instead of whatever the fuck the Marvel braintrust is doing with their post-credit commercials.
While the story is definitely both thinner and less elegantly plotted than that of Raiders, this is still a very fun, zippy film. It’s rightly critiqued for its casual orientalism, as well the writing of Willie. However, I don’t think the brilliance of Capshaw’s performance—particularly her physical comedy—should be overlooked. The part is thin on the page, but she fucking works it.
