The Lighthouse 2019
thematically uninteresting (i've seen too much mid-century modernist stage plays to find this to be fresh). but the photography, sfx, accents and atmosphere were all lovely. i could watch a thousand more films with this kind of attention to period details from across a greater spread of geographies and time periods.

Pain and Glory 2019
incredible start (art design on those graphics) and perfect ending pay-off. but i was genuinely squirming in my seat with boredom during those conversations with the actor and all the heroin hits.

The Amazing Johnathan Documentary 2019
"You're taking a picture of a picture of a pitcher holding a pitcher."
WARNING: There's NO decent sleight-of-hand magic in this movie.
"F is for Fake" created this whole genre. A fraction of the new docs I see are about the making of the doc and include the director's memoir. Another fraction of docs does this blurring of fact and fiction: particularly around artists and their mythos. I'm a sucker for them all. This one wasn't as good as I had hoped but still delivered the goods.

Speed Racer 2008
so deep into letterboxd/film twitter that i actually watched this movie
shia labeouf should've been cast in this
the opening sequence is perfect.
the story is conventional, but at least it's anti-corporate/anti-fascist (yes, i'm looking at you Ready Player One)
