    The state and the process of aging is the backdrop. Not fake France. 

    A movie about journalism like Jeffery Wright’s character is about food. It’s not.

    A Bruegel painting come to life. This movie was misunderstood as a misfire when it came out. And pushed out of awards talk as soon as it had its festival premier. But it’s perfect on its own terms. 

    This movie should’ve started a genre revival. By now, there should have been a dozen more unwieldy historical movies with all crowds and no central character

    All the more special for having to send my dad to the library to rent it (because it’s not streaming) ahead of our trip to London. Because it’s recommended in, get this, the Lonely Planet guidebook as one of the five British films you should see and it was not only the one I hadn’t seen, but never heard of it.  

    Respect that it has no bother for plot. It really wandered, but I couldn’t help be won over by it by its charm.
