Christmas Day first time viewing.
My family left when I put this on.

A flock of penguins with missiles strapped to their backs. 

Seeing these set pieces for the first time in 20 years, after over-watching this as a kid, felt like remembering a dream.

Can’t defend this movie. 

Even when I watch it at home I can smell the midnight vibe of the IFC Center 

(Michael Cain double feature with Children of Men.)

Prison. Conscription. Arrests. Riot police. 

It about people who live under, against or within the nation-state. And the art, games, political actions, and food they create. And their connections to other people—all the minor and supporting characters. Their fight is against loneliness.  

The state and the process of aging is the backdrop. Not fake France. 

A movie about journalism like Jeffery Wright’s character is about food. It’s not.

Commentary with Michael Mann and James Caan—these dudes really mumble through it and only provide commentary here and there with factoids you can easily find elsewhere. Far from one of the better commentaries

That moment in heist movies when they unzip the empty duffel bags ready to load. Love that
