DamNation 2014
I fucking hate how moralizing outdoorsy people get and the overemphasis on bro-y Navy SEAL stunts as political activism. But this is a good topic for a documentary and this might be the only one we get. It’s true, some dams are illegitimate, and I spent this whole movie waiting for them to make that case. While it does have some wonderful photography, there’s so much space to do more data visualizations and economics you seen in movies, like Ava DuVerney…

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby 2006
Pound for pound one of the most quotable movies per minute. High watermark of Bush-core cinema

The Talented Mr. Ripley 1999
The tempo is off. They forgot what movie they were making in the edit booth. All the acting, costume/production design and cinematography was locked in. But it should’ve zipped along, instead it weighed heavy.

There Will Be Blood 2007
Not a top 3 PTA for me. Beautiful photography and acting. But not much else. None of the thematic material around the relationships between business, land, family and religion is fully baked. PTA just doesn’t have much to say here. We as a society need to reevaluate this movie’s stature

It's a Sin 2021
The spread of AIDS at that time *at that scale* among gay men didn’t happen because their mothers were homophobic lol
Please go see 120 BPM (2017)
A strong start (first 3 episodes) with good characters/acting and great story of friendship. But the ending (last 2 episodes) doesn't aspire for more than tear-jerk sentimentalism. This series fails to help us see the role political and corporate power played (when the Stephen Fry plot line was right there ready to be put to use). I never say “this series should be longer” but it should’ve been longer.
Still thinking about Colin and that Welsh accent
