The Godfather

The Godfather ★★★★★

Beyond the pure art and entertainment it provides, The Godfather has matured to be the established benchmark for gangster-dramas. It's attentions apply more in examining the Corleone lineage as a family institution than of them as a crime cartel hierarchy. And while it's textures are full of the courageous crime-dramas from the past, very few had the grittiness and sheer breadth and depth of Coppola's adaptation of Mario Puzo's novel. The performances are first class, with James Caan delivering an incredibly strong supporting performance as Vito (Marlon Brando) Corleone's eldest son Sonny.
