Rarely do I leave a theater in awe of a movie, but this one blew all of my expectations away. Watching this in an AMC Dolby theater was an amazing experience that allowed the intense sound design and beautiful cinematography to shine through. There were moments in this film that still stick out in my memory as perfectly cinematic and simply impressive.
Behind the perfectly choreographed action sequences, Eggers analyzes themes of family, love, and fate that we get to witness through each character's development. I wish I knew more about the mythology to truly appreciate Eggers' attention to detail and world building, but thankfully he made the Danish tale very easy to follow and understand. Not sure I even have to mention this, but the star-studded cast exceeded my expectations with the level of commitment to their characters and kept each scene interesting.
As someone who does not normally seek out this film genre, I didn't expect to love this movie as much as I did. To find a movie where I would not change anything about it is extremely rare, but that's what I found with The Northman.
