Zack Snyder's Justice League

Zack Snyder's Justice League ★★★★

I can’t even believe it. Maybe a month ago I literally thought the Snyder Cut was a stupid joke. The original Justice League is one of the worst movies of the last few years in my opinion. Even if the Snyder Cut could improve upon it, there’s no way it could actually be “good” and “worthwhile.”

Turns out it’s the best movie in the DCEU and it’s not even close. A superhero epic, and more so an epic film than any other superhero film before it: ENDGAME is the culmination of countless characters and a decade’s worth of films, but this JUSTICE LEAGUE genuinely feels like it can stand on its own. Its characters are genuinely fleshed out, and movingly so. (I was not expecting to be on the verge of tears several times.) It plays with the tone in fun ways and to great visceral effect. It has a consistent narrative that actually means something other than “Hey look, all the superheroes that couldn’t get along with each other managed to work together!” I think it retroactively makes Batman v Superman a better movie, by clarifying some of the thematic intent there. The weird thing is, even the Ultimate Cut of BvS isn’t as coherent and meaningful and emotional as the Snyder Cut of Justice League. It’s so, so, so odd to me. I think this is what happens when you allow creative people to do creative things.

Although... absolutely baffled by the fact that the post credits scenes happened before the credits. Still! This is a superhero movie that feels like an actual work of artistic expression, which is rare for blockbusters, even the good ones. ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE feels bound to be a cultural artifact, but at this point, I think I’m okay with that.
