Spencer

Spencer ★★★★½

Anxiety-laden, transfixing and idiosyncratic in ways most biopics would not dare go, Spencer challenges well-worn biopic tropes every bit as it does the strict royal etiquette, delivering an unglamorous but still sympathetic portrayal of Princess Diana. Much like the holiday party serving as the backdrop, Spencer is a beautiful lie carefully constructed to hide something unflattering and unpleasant, and Pablo Larrain's direction and a phenomenal lead performance from Kristen Stewart pull back the layers to reveal a complicated human being struggling to reclaim her identity in the wake of scandal.
