Gerry Hartman’s review published on Letterboxd:
this is not a movie about Tom Cruise flying planes. I mean, it literally is, but it’s actually about Tom Cruise saving blockbuster cinema as we know it during the mass extinction of movie stars. early on we’re introduced to the overarching metaphor of drone warfare as CGI-filled streaming movies, human piloting as theatrical releases with practical stunts and effects, and (not that I needed any convincing) as the rest of the movie played out, it demonstrates the validity of this take in spades. here and there I missed the colorful vibrancy of Tony Scott’s style, but this is genuinely kind of emotional and thrilling with a jaw-dropping, hooting and hollering third act. signing up for Scientology right now
