this was not at all what i was expecting, but it was fucking incredible, holy shit. a magical and surrealist adventure of filmmaking blended with a reflective character study of an egotistical man slowly destroying his own life. it's absolutely enchanting, even in its most frustrating moments. i'm normally hesitant throwing around the word masterpiece, but 8 1/2 fits the definition like no other. definitely going to need a rewatch to fully cement my thoughts, but this was just perfect and deserves every ounce of praise it has received.
