Sally Jane Black’s review published on Letterboxd:
I don't know if I am delighted by the heartwarming nature of this or disturbed by the anti-medical undercurrents. Not that I think the villainous doctor was portrayed as a competent, worthwhile doctor, but I'm not a fan of folk medicine, even if it's the heartwarming kind. I'm kinda a fucking jerk, though. I also am not 100% on board with the depiction of the African-Americans, even if they weren't exactly poorly portrayed.
But. It is heartwarming, and Lloyd is a warm, charismatic performer. He is certainly an able performer, and his character's kindness is occasionally beautiful. There are moments in the final sequence that are brilliantly realized, half-Marx Brothers, half-Keaton style tricksterism.
December count: 80/100.
