friendofhagrid’s review published on Letterboxd:
despite the typical mcu mediocrity from the screenwriter, here is a list of everything sam raimi accomplishes here that most mcu films don’t:
• the best mcu villain ever put to screen without question or debate
• color
• a memorable score
• serious consequences for our characters
• genuinely gruesome deaths (some of the most graphic ever in a pg-13)
• a focus on the emotional stakes
• horror and dread
• showing us how our characters feel rather than just telling
• breaking the typical marvel structure
• not as many jokes (though some are still there and they’re still bad)
• distinct and creative cinematography
• and without doubt the best third act any mcu film has ever had
thank you sam, please don’t leave again.
