Punch-Drunk Love 2002
People flood into the scene as they kiss in the hotel lobby, the world may be closing in on them but they don't have to face it alone.
An incomparable depiction of anxiety, so many small moments that make the human aspect of this so admirable, obviously credit to Sandler as well. Makes me wonder how much of PTA's own experience is poured into his work.
The type of reflective melancholy that we all experience in our own way, but…

Crimes of the Future 2022
Still not sure I’ve fully digested this one. Razor sharp, disturbing, and thought-provoking, but its greatest charm to me is that it feels like a 1990s future-horror. Its preoccupations feel quaint in the wake of ecological collapse and horrific feedback loops.
All the performances were the kind of natural uncanniness required to make a Cron work, and they totally leaned for me!

Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy 2021
Nippon Connection 2022, No. 7
My last review for this movie ended on me saying: „Please let me see this one at a cinema someday.“
Thanks to Nippon Connection, today I finally did. I have nothing else to add to my former review. This movie is magic.

My Neighbor Totoro 1988
Attended the funeral of an old kindergarden friend of mine today. Watching Totoro with my parents (their first time!) afterwards was just what I needed. Feels like a warm hug by Totoro itself. I am happy my parents liked it and that I was able to share it with them. ♡

The Approach of Autumn 1960
Nippon Connection 2022, No. 10
What a wonderful movie to end this years festival with.
Original 35mm copy at the DFF (German Film Museum). Thank you Nippon Connection for this rare opportunity.
A heartfelt black and white movie about a boy in the sixties. A boy without a father, who struggles to fit in, who is abandoned by his mother, and has a little beetle as his friend. Such a lovely and melancholic coming-of-age story. A sad movie that still…

The Northman 2022
Shakespeare and Odin meet in a dive - in "The Northman" Nordic mythology and pathetic theatricality collide and unleash an animalistic inferno in front of a picturesque and awe inspiring backdrop. Eggers opens up a bit to the mainstream here, but fortunately never sacrifices his individual vision in its entirety, so that his third work also offends some with the blunt sword (i always like it bold when it comes to filmmaking), fair enough. But fans can look forward to a strong film, even if it isn't as immersive as one might have hoped. Viva!

Kimi 2022
Really dug this. Kind of pulpy. Great camera movement. Fun fight scenes.
And this is the first time I've felt like I was watching a thriller that took a minute to really consider how the genre should be incorporating the modern surveillance state.
It's probably not the blueprint for the future of the genre or whatever. Some of the performances are kind of flat and some of the plot points are a little messy. But it was super fun and way more interesting than I anticipated.
