    The Matrix Resurrections

    ★★★★½

pretty damn good. hits a lot of the raw emotion I hoped it would. maybe one layer of structure too convoluted (felt like it lost a little momentum in the middle) but I absolutely love how much contempt this movie seems to have for its own existence. i like it a lot. some aspects I was not sold on but they really swung for the fences and I appreciate that because this movie would've sucked crap if they hadn't

  • Spider-Man: No Way Home

    Spider-Man: No Way Home

    ★½

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

"if we send them back, they die"

    let them do exactly that

spiderman has always been my favorite superhero and I grew up with the Raimi movies. I do not consider myself a full blown marvel grouch - I grew up with those phase 1 movies too and they blew my mind as a kid! hell I even broke down crying during the on your left scene in Endgame. but I've lost interest these past couple years, the CGI gets…

  • Benedetta

    Benedetta

I can't believe how bad this was and I'm super easy to please. Didn't even try to take any risks, didn't even seem to have anything to say, couldn't land on a tone or commit to much of anything. the romance didn't feel interesting or exciting or believable at all. none of the characters had interesting or even consistent motivations or satisfying resolutions to their stories.

and how do you make a movie about a lesbian nun during the black…

  • Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance

    ★★★

hmmm this one lost me. such incredibly cool stuff ruined by a bunch of stuff that has really no emotional weight whatsoever. the tender moments between rei and shinji and the entire ninth angel sequence are wonderful but nothing feels earned, especially with the new character. maybe it's just a limitation of the movie format but I dunno. interested to see where the next two go but I feel like it kind of blew its load at the end of this with only half, if that, of the necessary scaffolding done

  • Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

    Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

    ★★★

this movie spends about 45 minutes playing 21 Guns by green day and it is worse for it. devastator is sick but if this movie didn't have DoD funding it would be so much better

  • Transformers

    Transformers

    ★★★★

honestly a blast. completely meaningless and the most second Bush term movie ever but it's so cool. CGI is still really impressive, the main characters are passably interesting, the fights are insanely sick

  • Ninja Assassin

    Ninja Assassin

    ★★★

the ultimate 2009 movie. so sick

i always saw posters or maybe a glimpse of trailers for movies like this, but I was not allowed to watch them as a kid. kind of like the resident evil movies or underworld or splice. I just sort of imagined what they were; they must be so cool, so badass, so bloody and gory, with such a cool soundtrack. watching this was like finally getting to try hot fudge sundae pop tarts at…

  • Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone

Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone

    ★★★★½

floored by them taking operation yashima, one of the coolest things ever shown on television, and making it 10x cooler

  • Spider-Man 2

    Spider-Man 2

    ★★★★★

loved it since childhood but hadn't seen it in 10+ years. still absolutely amazing. everything you could ask for out of a superhero movie imo. raimi understands what makes Spiderman so great. just look at how little swinging we get in the new movies!!! the swinging in this movie is sooooooooo good

  • The Shining

    The Shining

    ★★½

this is a five star movie. this rating is a cheap trick to get someone to read this and this movie doesn't deserve it. im sorry.

there is a certain type of man who goes to movies alone, or perhaps with one petrified friend. these are generally screenings of old horror movies or perhaps movies that these men describe as "nic cage going FULL nic cage." these men get very excited when the lights go down because their performance is…

  • Dune

    Dune

    ★★★★★

Even better in IMAX (which you absolutely, absolutely should seek out). I can't believe this got made. Packed house.

The ornithopters are easily one of the coolest parts of the movie. one thing I noticed this time is that all of the giant Atreides ships look like beached naval vessels; incredibly mighty, incredibly imposing, but highly vulnerable and almost humiliated in this landscape. I can tell Denis loved making this movie. So happy with it

  • Dune

    Dune

    ★★★★★

yep, Denis did it. uncompromising and completely realized. lots of folks complaining about Zimmer's score being too loud but that was one of my favorite parts. it is laughable that people will watch this on HBO Max because they will probably hate it. it is phenomenal
