The Darjeeling Limited is a beautiful meditation on love, trust and death, told as a story of three brothers who set off on a journey of self-discovery. Wes Anderson's colorful frames capture the scenic beauty of India and his trademark direction adds a whimsical charm to the proceedings. Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Shwartzman are pitch perfect and have fantastic chemistry throughout. The bonding between the three of…

Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou has a meandering story, unfocused plotting and features uneven tonal shifts. It's a film that shouldn't by any means work, but somehow it does and to great effect.

Wes Anderson is undoubtedly one of the most unique voices in cinematic history and Steve Zissou might be the most interesting of his films. It's not even close to being perfect, but it's extremely unique and absurdly satisfying. The characters are pretty…

ROAD TO OPPENHEIMER: REVIEWING ALL CHRISTOPHER NOLAN FILMS

    #2 Memento (2000)

Memento is easily among Nolan's best films. Its exceptionally well crafted and features one of the best screenplays ever written. I genuinely adore the structure of the story with the colored sequences telling the story in reverse chronology and the black and white sequences presenting a forward chronology. All of this makes you feel like you actually have…

ROAD TO OPPENHEIMER: REVIEWING ALL CHRISTOPHER NOLAN FILMS

    #1 Following (1998)

It's nothing short of remarkable that Nolan made this on a shoestring budget of 6000 USD. The ambition on display, with heavy noir influences and non-linear storytelling is appreciable, but what's more interesting is that it actually works. Every piece fits in well, and it definitely captures your attention throughout.

The story itself, is quite unusual, but frankly, Nolan is not the one to tell usual stories. You can…

Fast X delivers more or less exactly what you
expect, and it is quite enjoyable on the whole. The action sequences are utterly ridiculous and dumb, but you know that already. The writing is all over the place and the dialogues are really terrible. But, Jason Mamoa, god, steals the show.

I kid you not, but I genuinely thought Dom was going to fly, like atleast two times.

Spirited Away is a beautifully animated film with wonderful world building, great characters and a wildly absurd premise. Surprisingly enough, this is my first Hayao Miyazaki film, and I was extremely satisfied. The detailed world and characters very well stood out for me, and despite a lot of wierdness and absurdity, I genuinely felt a lot of it was endearing, vibrant and colorful.

Spirited Away is widely considered to be one of the greatest films,…

Franklin J. Schaffner's Papillon is a remarkable examination of a man's undying human spirit. The sprawling story captures the very essense of freedom, and what it means to be free. Isn't existence itself an act of liberation? One of Papillon's escape attempts, ends him up in confinement. During his time there, he eases into a dream where he is charged of being guilty, not of a crime, but of leading a wasteful existence. This strengthens his resolve and gives him…

    ★★★★

Bullitt is an excellent cop drama that is escalated by its neat cinematography, detailed storytelling and a well structured plot. Steven McQueen is effortlessly charming and perfectly captures his character. The car chase is so iconic that people tend to forget how well put together the film is. It's a masterclass in tension building and the entire climax is very well directed.

And, of course, it isn't hard to see why the car chase is iconic. I'm pretty sure that…

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is undoubtedly one of the best written crime comedies of, like, all time. It's brillaintly structured, hillarious and the acting is absolute perfection. Robert Downey Jr. kills it, and Val Kilmer is chef's kiss. Michelle Monhagan is exceptional too. Loved the unpredictability of the script, and Shane Black's wonderful direction. It's a shame that I didn't watch this one before.

Guy Ritchie's The Covenant might be the biggest surprise of 2023! It's a gripping thriller that's also an excellent exploration of the bond between an American soldier and an Afghan interpreter. Guy Ritchie goes for a completely different direction style that is taut, realistic and absorbing. Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim's performances are great and their characters are well written. It's emotional, inspiring and rousing, making for a thoroughly engaging watch.
