    The Getaway

The first time I saw this film was in my late-20s and I didn't much care for it. I had just read the fantastic Jim Thompson novel and didn't appreciate the film for what it was. Flash forward 15 years and this is a god damn masterpiece. Even the lovey-dovey stuff that usually doesn't work for me in Peckinpah films came off sweet and endearing. Having a few more miles on my odometer also alters the perspective. That opening montage alone is worth the price of admission.

Always loved this movie but god damn did it play like gangbusters with a crowd. So fortunate to have this and THE GETAWAY as my welcome back to the New Beverly.

My favorite film I saw at TIFF. Plays like a thriller, unraveling layer upon layer as you squirm and bite your tongue from screaming “fuck you” at the rampant corruption and resulting human suffering. Hope this wins an Oscar.

    Wendy and Lucy

Crushing. That's about all I can say. Michelle Williams' restrained and nuanced performance of a woman teetering on the edge is fantastic. Kelly Reichardt's patient storytelling lets us really envelope ourselves into the story and into Wendy's life. Even if we've never been this far out on the edge, we've all had moments like this. But the beauty in the film is Wendy's love for Lucy. I won't spoil the end but it was both heartbreaking and lovely.
