Moonlight

Moonlight ★★★★½

This film is everything. Beauty, love, and anger. Intensely meditative, and swooning.

Perhaps the most towering component of the film are the actors. In particular, the three actors that portray Chiron (Rhodes, Sanders, and Hibbert) lend beautiful nuance to their performances. Much like last year's Carol, the actors can convey incredibly complex feelings and thoughts with mere glances. Mere lip movements and glances tell more than long monologues could ever do. The supporting cast members (including the three actors that play Kevin, Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, and Janelle Monae) also give fantastic performances.

The other elements of the film also help to enhance the tragedy and beauty of it all. The music, the cinematography, the structure of the film itself. The only thing that holds this film back--ever so slightly--is the ending. However, I'm sure future rewatches will help clarify this. And this film will most certainly be rewatched.
