Patrick Fisackerly’s review published on Letterboxd:
I like the idea of The Mask, the character. A man’s unleashed repressed id manifesting as a horny Tex Avery cartoon is a funny idea. I just don’t think this movie is very funny. I didn’t care about the plot (the organized crime stuff and the Mask stuff felt like two different movies fighting each other), and all of the female characters were either sex objects or shrews. Jim Carrey also plays this...too big? His Stanley is still pretty goofy and charismatic. There isn’t enough contrast between him and The Mask.
I don’t know, I didn’t expect to be breaking down my issues with The Mask tonight, but I bet you didn’t expect you’d be reading it either.
