Avatar: The Way of Water 2022
An instance in which a star rating simply can't do justice to the complex feelings I have towards the film.
On the one hand, I can't deny the immersive allure of Avatar: The Way of Water. It's high-def, high-depth, high-frame-rate rendering of Pandora and its creaturely inhabitants is a showcase of astonishments, a cinematic spectacle that had me consistently saying to myself, What am I looking at??, and filling me with giddiness as a result. I appreciate the way Cameron…

Don't Worry Darling 2022
“In order to fill the Fair Exchange time slot, each episode had to be expanded to an hour, an idea which did not sit well with Serling, nor the production crew. ‘Ours is the perfect half-hour show... If we went to an hour, we'd have to fleshen our stories, soap opera style. Viewers could watch fifteen minutes without knowing whether they were in a Twilight Zone or Desilu Playhouse,’ Serling responded.”
This movie is 123 minutes long.

Weird Science 1985
Love this film and rewatching it made me realize how great Kelly LeBrock is in this film. Can't imagine this film with Sharon Stone, Kelly Emberg, Demi Moore or Robin Wright (the others considered for the role). Wish her career had a different trajectory. She's so solid. And Bill Paxton is the 2nd MVP in this film. Might be my favorite performance of his.
Oh... I love Anthony Michael Hall but I can't stand his jive pimp impression. The bar…

“What shall the history books read?”
There’s not a frame wrong in this movie.

Her Smell 2018
Serious contender for my fave film of the year. I wasn't expecting it to be as funny as it is. Elisabeth Moss had me in tears. Alex Ross Perry's dialogue and direction are tight. And Sean Price Williams's 35mm 2 perf and 4 perf cinematography is lush and exciting.
I hope this film is remembered during awards season. Alex is notoriously over-looked at the Spirits. Let's hope this changes.
Watched it on the big screen at Arclight, Hollywood.

Apollo 11 2019
Absolutely amazing. Such incredible footage and sound, but even more amazing know it's all stitched together. Feels so complete deep in the process, like a great '70s film, where everyone is doing their highly technical job, talking in jargon, but somehow it's always clear what's going on. It's intense and emotional and beautiful. Also, loved the very thoughtful use of graphics. Just all around one of the best docs I've seen in a while. SPACE!

Bohemian Rhapsody 2018
Planned to watch Best Picture nominee Bohemian Rhapsody tonight, but copy of film I got is just a two-hour trailer. This happen to anyone else?

Doctor Strange 2016
Easily one of my fave Marvels. The Inception/M.C. Escher-esque visuals are pretty rad. Must have looked great on the big screen. Oh... and that shot where Mads get imprisoned by the Saw-like mechanical trap is 🔥.
I used an emoji in a Letterboxd entry. What's the world coming to?
