One of the most entertaining adventure movies of all time, Curse of the Black Pearl was a terrific start to the series that presented one of the most interesting characters of 21st century film.
A movie based on a theme park ride should not have been as good as this is, but Gore Verbinski crafted an immensely entertaining and simple narrative full of colorful characters and exciting action. The story is very engaging, and moves along at a perfect pace, almost never slowing down.
The acting is very strong, but it's Johnny Depp's portrayal of the now iconic Jack Sparrow that makes the movie. He gives a quirky and unique performance that made his character an absolute delight to watch. Geoffrey Rush is great as the evil Barbossa, and lovers Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley work well together.
The action is extremely well handled, with excellent fight choreography and epic ship duels. It's all very well shot, with strong cinematography and innovative production design.
My only complaint is that it's a tad too long. There are a lot of characters and subplots here, some of witch could easily be trimmed or cut entirely.
Regardless, Pirates of the Caribbean is a swashbuckling good time that never ceases to entertain with its great characters and relentless pace. In short, a promising start to a disappointing franchise.
