In 1999, teenage sisters Celeste and Eleanor survive a seismic, violent tragedy. The sisters compose and perform a song about their experience, making something lovely and cathartic out of a catastrophe - while also catapulting Celeste to stardom. By 2017, Celeste is a mother to a teenage daughter of her own and is struggling to navigate a career fraught with scandals when another act of terrifying violence demands her attention.

Sorta underwhelming? Not really, though. I have no idea. The visuals and editing were the best thing about it, seriously stunning looking film. My low amount of enthusiasm to talk about it pretty much sums up why I didn’t LOVE it. There was a good 40 minutes of nothingness in the middle of it when Natalie Portman was introduced that took me out and almost brought me back but not quite. Everyone keeps calling this a movie where you love it or you hate it and I am aggressively in the middle.

This will undoubtedly appeal to some, but not to me. Vox Lux sets out to interrogate the connection, if any, between pop music and terrorism. Yeah, you read that right. Pop music and...terrorism.
I'm not adverse to this concept on principle. In fact, I think this question has the potential to give way to something really interesting, hell, even entertaining. Unfortunately, the movie is so tonally inconsistent and shoddily written, presenting half-baked ideas without fully committing to any of them, that I don't think it's worth trying to piece together Corbet's most recent depiction of megalomania.

“this is your show”
completely striking, i held my breath the entire time. there are sequences here that STUN, either in a positive or negative way, depending on the person watching. it often drips with sickly humor and the way the camera moves and the way scenes cut from one to the next are almost too slick to be believed. and while the appeal for most is natalie portman, raffey cassidy is alarmingly good and gives one of the most surprising performances i’ve seen in a while
this is probably a love it or hate it kind of movie, but i was really invested. this isn’t the pop star epic you’re expecting, but if given a chance, it’s a totally new kind of experience. and for me, that’s a beautiful thing
