This is my first time seeing M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable and I can safely say it is leaps and bounds far better than I ever imagined. Shyamalan didn't need to blow things up, have suits that make a man fly, to make an absolute great "superhero" film. No he used the power of his storytelling to do the work.

Watching this for the umpteenth viewing, I couldn't help but focus on how every scene, set-up, narrative development, choice of color and mood and music, feels fresh. Even the most rudimentary moments are captured by M. Night Shyamalan's determination of form. Just take a look at the opening, with the birth of Mr. Glass, as Shyamalan captures the disorientation and confusion with the help of two mirrors and a floaty handheld long-take. Following that, the camera moving back and forth between the space of two seats on the train, or the durational tension of David Dunn waking up after the accident, with a fellow passenger slowly dying in the foreground. I saw "Spilt" for a while with no clue it's connected to "Unbreakable" so I was wondering about one scene. Now I catched "Unbreakable" up and liked it even more. One reason is the new interpretation and understatement of a superhero who does not save the entire planet rather than the people from next door.The camera is perfection to me. With all the superhero bombardments going on in the cinemas at the moment, I decided it was time to rewatch Shyamalan's take on the superhero genre and see if it holds up. Boy, did it ever.
I have always felt that Shyamalan is a better storyteller than a director. If I look at all his films, I think this film strikes the best balance. He has written one of the best origin stories ever and manages to direct it with perfect pacing and a distinct visual style, one that I enjoyed quite a bit.

No other movie has been able to replicate the feeling that I get from the final scene of Unbreakable. My chest swells with tearful joy at the same time that my heart sinks with dread. It is an inexplicable paradox, yet it happens to me all the same, no matter how many times I watch that ending.
On an unfortunate note, falling in love with this film all over again has just made me infinitely more worried for Glass.
