  A rare Estonian silent made by Theodor Luts. Fairly primitive production, but I felt they managed pretty well considering Estonian film industry wasn't exactly blooming at the time. The topic is events leading up to the Estonian War of Independence in 1920 following a few pals fighting off the opposition invading their country. First part is mostly character building until war scenes take over the entire movie. Mainly a curio for people wanting to see what could come out of Estonia in the old days.

  Maybe it doesn't have the auteuriffic virtues of the highest canon, but it's world-class pop-film making, with none of the longueurs and clumsinesses you expect from less-developed film cultures like Estonia. Pyro effects in the climactic battle scene were spectacular.

  Available print is... quite lovely, always a big plus.
