I don't think I've ever seen a film with better storytelling. Next to zero expository dialogue in the first act, everything is set up through action, and done so perfectly. One of Cameron's best.

James Cameron demonstrates not just peerless narrative economy, but utilizes it in the pursuit of classical cinematic traits. It's like he couldn't decide whether to tackle noir, sci-fi, romance, or cautionary tale, and instead of settling for one, he went all-out and made movie history. He's been making the same movie ever since with various degrees of success, based in a form of both technological and emotional drive. The Terminator is a tech-noir about the end of the world and the beginning of an everlasting love. A story that sprints towards the finish line because it fears the future, and yet it seeks the embrace of destiny. It also fucking kicks ass.

technoir. a perfectly textured, mechanized genre piece about the brutal systems and technology we produce to ostensibly reduce the imperfections in the world around us. turns out that we are those imperfections. cameron vividly yet economically renders the inherent horror and intimacy of steel piercing flesh; the endgame of corporate automation made into an existential, technophobic slasher. "machines need love too."
James Cameron's film was the gateway drug that introduced me to my lifelong addiction to adrenaline inducing movies! I had never witnessed or experienced a film that could maintain relentless non-stop action and thrills throughout the entire film, muchless one that could literally affect me physiologically before!

It's probably (no, definitely) stupid, for a lot of reasons, to compare him to Welles, but this is nevertheless Cameron's CITIZEN KANE. the work of a born filmmaker and a peerless technical leap. Seeing this kind of thing is about as close as I get to having human emotions.
